Moving into a circular economy, we want to help create a cleaner, healthier, and waste free future in our operations and within our communities. Our ambition is to achieve zero food waste, waste to landfills and adopt sustainable packaging by 2030.
We are fundamentally rethinking the packaging of our Lotus's Own Brand products and strive to make our packaging 100 per cent recyclable and reusable by 2025.
We will continue to work closely with suppliers to change or redesign those packages.
In our efforts to help reduce the increasing number of single-use plastic bags landing in landfills or as litter, we took the step to stop offering these plastic bags at our checkout counters and encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags to shop since 1 July 2021 in all our 64 stores across Malaysia. This has helped to remove around 26 million single-use plastic bags. Not only this is great for the environment, this provides our customers the opportunity to participate in the preservation of our planet.
We will continue to work towards removing single-use plastics in our operations.
Unlike our food surplus programme which sees us donating edible yet unsold food to communities in need, food waste is categorized as unsafe to eat.
Our journey began with halving our food waste, and we are now finding new ways to make unwanted food in our operations to good use.
In doing our part to tackle the increasing number of textile waste going to landfills, we installed clothing recycling bins in more than 29 of our stores located in the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and the most recent addition - Johor Bahru.
Since 2015, a total of 1.6 million kg of clothing, footwear, fashion accessories, bedding and soft toys have been collected for donation or repurposed to become other useable products.
We will continue our efforts to install clothing recycling bins at more stores.
