Lotus's lends a helping hand this Ramadan and Raya

Lotuss Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (formerly known as Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd) (Lotus’s Malaysia) is teaming up both with its colleagues and small and medium enterprise supplier, All Kurma Sdn Bhd to ensure those affected the most by the economic effects of Covid-19 is not left behind during this Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

The retailer is rolling out not one, but two annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, the Kiriman Ikhlas Raya (KIR) and the Tabung Kiriman Ikhlas (TKI) thus affirming its commitment to benefitting the communities it operates in.

“For the KIR initiative, we are teaming up with the Majlis Agama Islam and Lembaga Zakat across the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory, Selangor, Johor, Kedah, and Kelantan for the distribution of the Zakat Wakalah contributed by Lotus’s colleagues. This particular initiative will see the contribution of RM300 worth of household necessities to 100 pre-selected asnaf (underprivileged) families for a grander Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration,” said Lotus’s Head of Corporate Communications and CSR, Hanim Hamdan.

“This is not the first time that colleagues have contributed their Zakat Wakalah as we have been practicing this since 2019, but is the first time that we are working with religious bodies across five states at the same time,” she continued.

Lotus’s, as Tesco Malaysia, had in 2019 collaborated with Pusat Pungutan Zakat (PPZ), Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (MAIWP) in distributing household goods to 12 asnaf families located in Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Desa Rejang, Setapak. In 2020, the Zakat Wakalah distribution was allocated to 60 Tesco store and Distribution Centre colleagues who found themselves to be the sole breadwinners as their family members have been made redundant because of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the TKI initiative provides Lotus’s customers the opportunity to help the same pre-selected asnaf families while they shop in Lotus’s stores. With every purchase of at least RM18 worth of All Kurma products, RM1 will be channelled to the TKI. All Kurma product ranges include Siafa, Mahadhi, al-Hisham, Masafii, Date Crown and Springdale Cottage.

“Our target is to raise RM30,000 in funds, which then be converted into Lotus’s vouchers to be distributed to the same 100 pre-selected asnaf families. Though the TKI campaign is already running now until 2 June 2021, we are hoping that we will be able to hit the target before the deadline,” said Hanim.

Through the combined KIR and TKI initiatives, the asnaf beneficiaries will be able to enjoy RM300 worth of cash vouchers and RM300 worth of household necessities.
