Lotus’s Sama-Sama Hidup Baru brings renewed hope to the homeless and urban poor

Lotuss Stores (M) Sdn Bhd (Lotus's Malaysia) fulfils its first Sama-Sama Hidup Baru on-the-ground activation with its long time charity partner Kechara Soup Kitchen at the Pusat Khidmat Gelandangan, Medan Tunku. The center provides refuge and support to 280 homeles and urban poor communities.

Today’s activity is the first of five community initiatives that will take place this year as part of Lotus’s effort to help the homeless, displaced individuals and urban poor communities to get back on their feet and have access to better hygiene care as well as safe and nutritious meals.

"It’s our #KitakanJiran spirit that drives everyone at Lotus’s to invest more into our communities. Through initiatives like these, we together with our participating partners want these oftenly forgotten individuals to have a more positive outlook on life through renewed hope, so that they can become a self-sufficient member of society. With support from our customers, we are able to reach out to more people in need”, said Hanim Hamdan, Head of Communications and CSR of Lotus’s Malaysia.

Together, realizing today’s programme, Lifebuoy and Clear donated 280 hygiene care packs to the individuals at Pusat Khidmat Gelandangan, Medan Tunku.

Sama-Sama Hidup Baru digital charitable fundraiser was launched in December 2022, with the aim to give a new start to 3,000 homeless and displaced individuals. Customers can take part in its #KitakanJiran programmes by donating a minimum of 390 MY Lotus’s points (RM2) via its Lotus’s Malaysia app. The contributed points will be converted into meals, hygiene kits, and other essentials, including a makeover session and an opportunity to join its Krew Ceria Lotus’s.

“We hope that the makeover and the support extended will make them feel good about themselves and boost their confidence. Hopefully this will motivate them to become more productive individuals, earn a decent living so that they can remove themselves from their current situation”, added Hanim

The on-the-ground activities will also be carried out throughout the year at locations like Pudu, Ipoh, Penang and Johor and customers who are keen to donate their points can do so via the Lotus’s Malaysia app until December 2023.

Last month, in celebration of Chinese New Year, the retailer together with Kechara Soup Kitchen distributed over 500kg of vegetables, fruits and bakery items to 30 families at Mount Erskine, Penang through its daily Food Surplus Programme. Its Food Surplus programme has provided B40 and B10 communities much needed relief from the increasing cost of living and prevent safe and edible food from going to landfills. To date, Lotus’s have rescued up to 2,425,189 kilogrammes of unsold but still edible food from going to waste, which equates to more than 10.5 million meals for the less fortunate.
